Episode 38: Monster’s University Review

June 14, 2017

In which Gabriel yet again announces the wrong episode number.
This week, in honor of the release of Cars 3, we examine the prequel to the much beloved Monster's Inc. How does Monster's University measure up to its predecessor? And how does it stand on its own as a film?
We both agree, that while not as good Monster's Inc.(obviously), it is a very well made film that not only enrichs the first film, but also takes genre tropes and turns them into something very special and unique.

Recent Films,

James, R.O.T.O.R.(RiffTrax) 1:18, Until Dawn(Video Game) 3:55,

Gabriel, Atonement 5:38, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emporer 8:25, The Mummy(2017) 10:18,

One of Pixar's most unique films.

January 4, 2017

We've been waiting to review these films since before we even began the podcast. In this episode we finally get around to looking the first film in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy.
The common notion on the internet seems to be that "the Hobbit movies suck!". We completely disagree, not only do we believe these to be good films, we believe the they are very faithful to Tolkien's books and mythology.

Whether you already love these movies, or can't stand the sight of them, we hope you will listen and come away with a deeper respect and appreciation for this series.

“Minisode” 4: Rogue One Film Review

December 20, 2016

A "minisode" in loosest sense.

Here we dive deep into the latest film entry in the Star Wars universe. The first stand alone anthology film, Rogue One leaves much of the more lighthearted elements of the series behind in favor of a darker and grimier tone.

Does this new "war film" format pay off?

Episode 16: Bernie Reivew

December 7, 2016

Today, we review a one of the more forgotten films in director Richard Linklater's filmography.
Bernie is a brilliant satrical black comedy based on a true story. Very funny and featuring what is likely Jack Black's finest performance.

We both really enjoy this film and highlyl recommend it!

Minisode 3: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Film Review(W/TJ Draper of MovieByte and Retake)

November 25, 2016

In our third Minisode, Gabriel is joined by TJ Draper of Retake, to discuss the latest film entry into the Potterverse, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Both hugely enjoyed J. K. Rowling's screenwriting debut and think this is a very worthy entry into the series.

There's definitely more to this film than some of the critical ratings would have you think... You could even say it's Underrated!

A big thanks to TJ for joining us in this review!

November 10, 2016

We have our first guest!
In this episode we have on Chad Hopkins of the Cinescope Podcast on to talk about his pick, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time!

Mike Newell's adaptation of the popular video game is a divisive film, even among our hosts.

There are some audio issues with the recording, but it's still a great conversation.

Episode 11: Megamind Review

October 26, 2016

In this episode we look at our first animated film, Dreamworks 2010 release, Megamind!
A bit of a surprise from the fairly hit or miss studio, Megamind is a genuinely hilarious, clever and often forgotten gem.
One host even believes it might just be one of the most quotable films of all time.

A really fun discussion on a much lighter film than usual.

Episode 10: Our Top Ten Favorite Films

Minisode 1: The Magnificent Seven Review(1960/2016)

October 18, 2016

In our very first minisode, Gabriel reviews both the classic 1960 film and the 2016 remake.
He enjoys both but favors the Antoine Fuqua remake a bit more.

Episode 9: Interstellar Review

October 12, 2016

In episode 9, hosts Gabriel and James once again find themselves in disagreement over the overall quality of the film as they discuss Christopher Nolan's 2014 space epic Interstellar.
James loves the movie to the point of calling it a near masterpiece, whereas Gabriel finds that, the films leaps in logic and out of left field final act keep it from the ambitious heights director Christopher Nolan was reaching for.
They both agree, however, that the film contains moments of breathtaking genius that make it worth viewing, regardless of your final opinion.

Episode 8: The Frighteners Review

October 6, 2016

Today we go back to visionary director Peter Jackson's very first Hollywood film. The Frighteners is a very underrated dark comedy that unfortunately bombed on it's release due to poor marketing.
It also features Michael J. Fox's last leading role in a feature film.

We both think it's a lot of fun and definitely worth a second look.
